古典尺八の魅力は何といっても、江戸時代に吹かれていた独奏曲、つまり独奏の調（しらべ）にあります。
これを尺八では本曲といっています。
いまでは普通に調というと音楽になりますが、元来の本曲は音楽ではありませんでした。
本曲を吹くことは吹禅（すいぜん）といい、座って精神を集中させる坐禅と同様に禅の理念を呼吸で表します。まず呼吸を「気」ととらえ、その息を管の中に吹き込むことで「気」の流れが音に変換する。この音を「気」の表れといい、これが本曲であります。
「気」とは万物生成の根元でもあります。言葉を変えていうなれば、自然界の音、もしくは神羅万象の音をこの一管に集約するといってもいいかもしれません。
地無し延べ管である古典尺八は、仏教でいうところの法（真理）を表現する道具と考えられ、その道具に竹を使うことから法竹（ほっちく）とも称されます。
「地無し延べ管尺八」とは、管の中を砥の粉などの地を塗って加工し調律した明治以降の尺八とは異なり、竹の節をくり貫いて孔を開けたままの、自然に近い、竹本来の響きを活かした尺八のことです。

The charm of the classical shakuhachi is, above all, the solo music that was played in the Edo period, that is, the ”shirabe”（a piece） played solo.
This is called ”honkyoku” among shakuhachi music.
Nowadays, when we talk about shirabe, it usually means music, but the original honkyoku was not music.
Blowing the honkyoku is called ”suizen”, and it expresses the idea of zen through breathing, just like zazen, where you sit and concentrate your mind. First of all, breathing is regarded as “ki”（spiritual atmosphere）, and by blowing that breath into the tube, the flow of “ki” is converted into sound. This sound is called the manifestation of “ki”, and this is the honkyoku.
“Ki” is also the root of creation of all things. In other words, it may be said that the sounds of the natural world, or the sounds of everythings of the world, are collected in this one tube of bamboo.
The classic shakuhachi, which is called ”jinasi-nobekan-shakuhachi, is considered a tool that expresses the truth(hou) in Buddhism, and is also called ”hocchiku” because bamboo（chiku） is used for the tool.
“Jinashi nobekan-shakuhachi” is a natural shakuhachi with holes cut through the bamboo joints. It is a shakuhachi that makes use of the natural sound of bamboo, unlike the modern shakuhachi, which are tuned by coating the inside of the tube with whetstone.
